"Emelia! Get out here right now! You’re going to be late for school!" Emelia’s mom yelled from the kitchen.
Emelia came running into the room with her backpack slinged over on her shoulder.
"Hun, here’s your lunch for the day and here’s some money for you to ride the metro. Now hurry off to school! You’ll need an education if you want to get a good job," this was Mrs. Rodriguez’s usual talk that she gave Emelia in the morning.
"Mom, I already know what I want to be, a singer," she said.
"Stop filling your head with these crazy dreams. Now you need to get your head out of the clouds and go to school!"
Emelia’s passion in life was to sing. She loved nothing more, except maybe her family. Her family of 3 lived in a small town home in downtown Houston. Their home was barely big enough and they could hardly pay the rent. Just Mrs. Rodriguez working at the beauty shop around the corner and her job at the grocery store was not enough. The Rodriguez family could not afford for Emelia to have voice lessons, so for now she would have to find another passion in life that would help pay the rent.
Emelia slammed her locker door, " Nick it’s just so unfair. She doesn’t seem to get it. If I become a famous singer I can pay for the rent and much more. I know I can do it, if she would just let me try."
"Emelia, you should probably step into her shoes. Think about it, she only wants the best for you and more. She wants for you to have a better life than she does," Nick replied.
"I know, I know. But, I don’t see a problem with her life. It’s just fine. When she won’t even let me try to break into the music industry, it makes me think that she thinks I’m not good enough. What do you think?"
"I think that you are an amazing singer, but I also see where your mom is coming from."
"Never mind, it’s no use talking to you."
"Hey!"
"Nick, are you going to choir practice after church on Sunday?"
Emelia and her family were very strong in their faith. They had went to church every Sunday, ever since they converted to Christianity about 5 years ago.
"Ya, I really want that solo that Mr.Pieper is giving out," Nick replied.
"Same here. Well, I’ve got to go to class, see you on Sunday."
I’ve got joy, joy, joy, joy, down in my heart
Down in my heart
Down in my heart
I’ve got the joy, joy, joy, joy, down in my heart today…..
"Okay, everyone. Thank you to those who tried out for the solos. I will come back with the results next rehearsal and we are done for the day, so have a good day."
Nick and Emelia were just about to leave when a brilliant idea popped into Emelia’s head.
"Oh my gosh, Nick," Emelia nudged Nick in the arm.
"What?"
"I’ve got a brilliant idea! How ‘bout I ask Mr. Pieper to give me voice lessons."
"Emelia, I know you really want this, but don’t you think that maybe this is too much. You have enough on your plate of activities. There’s school, working at the coffee shop, choir, babysitting your sister whenever you can and some other stuff."
"Nick, I’m serious. I can quit my job at the coffee shop. It’s not like I like the job anyways."
"Well, won’t your mom notice when you don’t have money?"
"That’s true. Fine, I won’t quit my job at the coffee shop. I’ll just add this to my list of things to do."
"Okay, but don’t say that I didn’t warn you. By the way, I don’t want you to get the idea that I don’t believe in your dream of becoming a singer. It’s just that, I’m trying to look out for you and this might effect your work in other aspects of your life."
"Well thanks, I guess. I’m going to go talk to Mr.Pieper."
Emelia walked over to the piano, where Mr.Pieper was gathering all of his sheet music and stuffing them into his forest green, messenger bag.
"Um… Mr. Pieper,"Emelia stammered.
"Yes, Mrs Rodriguez."
"Mr. Pieper, I was wondering, if it would be any trouble at all, if you could give me voice lessons. You know that I probably won’t be able to pay you, but maybe you have some job that I can do for you."
"Emelia, I’m not sure about this."
"Please, sir. You of all people know how much I want this. I have no one else I can turn to for help. I would really be honored and appreciative if you would teach me."
"Okay, but I must tell you that the job I’m about to give to you may not be something you can fit into your busy schedule."
"I don’t mind, what is it?"
"Can you babysit my daughter Cindy on Wednesdays?’
" Yes, no problem. I babysit my sister all the time. When can I expect to have a lesson?"
"Does this Tuesday sound good to you?"
"Yes, that should be fine. Thank you so much Mr. Pieper, you won’t regret this."
"I sure hope not."
Sorry, this is not all of my draft. My computer at home won't let me post and the only way I can post it, is to send it to school, but when I sent my email, it was only part of it, but I should have it all posted by this Thursday.
